Best Practice for Adding Content to the Modules Area in Canvas

When adding new discussions, assignments, quizzes, and pages to your modules, follow these instructions:

Best Method for Adding New Discussions, Assignments, Quizzes, and Pages to your Modules Area

Click on Modules
Locate the module where you would like to add the learning item > Click on the + to the right of module header
Click on the drop down to add the desired assignment type (discussion, assignment, quiz, or page) Click Create Topic > Enter Topic Name > select desired indention > Click Add Item
From the Modules area, drag and drop the newly added item to the desired location Publish item if you would like students to be able to interact with the discussion
Click on the title for the newly created item
Click Edit
Enter instructions and desired information in the rich content editor > Click Save

From the Modules area in the left course menu > go to the module where you would like to add your discussion, assignment, quiz, or page > and click the + icon to the right of the module header
Select the desired learning item making sure to not select an item that has already been added to another module > Click Add Item

Discussions, assignments, quizzes, or pages can also be added from each of the respective areas, but this method is not recommended because you would still need to add the item to the modules area and there is more room for error if you link a wrong item in the module.
From the respective item area > Click + Discussion, or + Assignment, or + Quiz, or + Page (This is an example of adding a discussion from the Discussions area)
Fill in the desired information > adjust settings > click Save
Then go back to the Modules area and add the learning item in the desired location. (See instructions below on adding existing discussions, assignments, quizzes, and pages to the modules area with cautionary note.
