Creating Canvas assignments for IXL skills and diagnostic

Teachers can select IXL activities to be included in their Canvas assignments. They can link skills or the diagnostic so that students can pinpoint their levels or keep them up to date. Once an activity is selected by a teacher, students will be able to access the activity directly through Canvas.

  • In the course navigation menu, click on Assignments.
  • Click on +Assignments in blue on the top right of the page.
  • Add a title and description to the activity as needed
  • Scroll down to the section titled “Submission Type” and choose External Tool.
  • Find “IXL Learning” from the menu and click on it. This will open up IXL’s Activity Selector.

  • Teachers can now browse and select IXL skills by subject, grade level, or pinned skill plan. In addition, teachers will be able to search skills and select the diagnostic.
  • Click the “Link skill” button
  • Click the "Review and assign" button
  • Click the "Save" button

  • The Activity Selector will close.
  • Click the "Select" button

  • Click the "Save & Publish"
  • Now, you need to add the assignment to your Module.
  • Click Modules
  • Click the + button
  • Find and choose the assignment you created
  • Click Add Item

Once teachers have created an assignment, teachers and their students will be able to access the assignment from Canvas through the Activity Launcher. To do so, teachers and students can take the following steps:

  • In Canvas, click on the assignment link in the Module
  • A button will appear with a prompt to load the assignment in a new tab.
  • Click on that button to launch the assignment in a new tab. The assignment will then open with teachers and students automatically signed in to their accounts that are linked with Canvas.
