How to Submit Assignments Using Google Drive LTI 1.3

You can easily upload a file from Google Drive for an assignment. Canvas accepts Google Doc, Google Sheet, and Google Slide files. You can also upload any uploaded Word (.doc/.docx), Excel (.xls/.xlsx), PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx), and PDF files not converted to Google Docs formatting.


  • From Modules > navigate to your assignment > click the Assignment link

  • Then click Start Assignment

  • Click the Google Drive (LTI 1.3) tab.
  • (Note: If this is your first time using Google Drive, you must first authorize Canvas to access your Google Drive. Follow the prompts to select your Google account, sign in to Google, and then allow access. Future submissions from Google Drive will not require this step.
  • If the Google Drive (LTI 1.3) tab is not available, this feature has not been allowed for this assignment.



  • Click the name of your file > click Select

  • You should receive confirmation that your assignment has been submitted.

  • If your submission has been queued for upload, an uploading icon will display (1). If your submission failed to upload, you will see an upload failed icon (2). Click the download submission link to view the error.
