1. View Sharing Settings For a Folder in Canvas 1.1. From within Canvas, you can view the sharing settings of a folder by selecting the Share icon from the upper right corner (Fig. 1). | Figure 1 |
1.2. The section People and groups will list user groups and individuals that the folder has been shared with, along with their level of permission (Fig. 1). For course folders, you will see at least two groups: a group of Creators and a group of Viewers. The Creator group contains anyone with instructor-level access to the course and the Viewer group contains all enrolled students.
2. Sharing a Panopto Folder 2.1. Click on the folder you would like to share. In the right-hand corner of your screen, you will see a share icon (Fig. 2). | Figure 2 |
2.2. This will bring you to the Share tab of the folder settings (Fig. 3). | Figure 3 |
3. Inheriting Permissions 3.1. A subfolder may be set to Inherit members and permissions from a parent folder. If a subfolder is inheriting permissions, it has the same sharing settings as its parent folder. If the folder is inheriting its permissions, it will state this underneath People and groups (Fig. 4). Note: If the parent folder is shared, this subfolder will also be shared. If you want to change who can see videos in the subfolder, then you will have to add them to the parent folder settings. | Figure 4 |
3.2. To Stop inheriting users and permissions: select Change, located to the right of the parent folder listed (Fig. 5a). The menu, Stop inheriting users and permissions? will appear. Select Stop Inheriting (Fig. 5b). Note: If you do not wish to have the folder inherit users, deselect the checkbox to the left of Keep # member(s) as an added user. | Figure 5a Figure 5b |
3.3. Alternatively, you can inherit folder permissions by selecting Change underneath the Who can access this folder section (Fig. 6a). Select the checkbox next to Inherit members and permissions from (parent folder) and then select Save to inherit the parent folder permissions (Fig. 6b). Note: A warning message may appear at the bottom indicating that a person or group may be removed and lose access. | Figure 6a Figure 6b |
4. Share with People and User Groups 4.1. Under People and groups, start typing the name of the person or group with whom you want to share the folder (Fig. 7a). Based on the name or group you start typing, a suggested user list will appear for you to select the correct person or group from (Fig. 7b). Note: Underneath People and groups, you will notice information about whom the video is already shared with: the number of groups or people with access and where the video's permissions are inherited from. | Figure 7a Figure 7b |
4.2. Once selected, you can opt to do the following: Change their level of access to the folder: Viewer, Creator, Publisher (as described below); Notify people, which sends them an email to let them know they have access to the video; and Message, where you can type in a custom message to send to them regarding the folder. Once you have done this, select Send to share the folder (Fig. 8). Note: When you share a folder with another user, you will not be able to remove their access to individual videos in the folder until the folder is unshared with them, first.
| Figure 8 |
4.3. To unshare a folder with an individual or user group, select the X that appears to the far right of their name on the Share tab of this window (Fig. 9). Note: Learn more about user groups at How to Create User Groups | Figure 9 |
5. Sharing with a Wider Audience 5.1. You can also share the folder with a wider audience. Select Change from under Who can access this folder to change the sharing option (Fig. 10a). A pop-up list will appear with the following sharing options (Fig. 10b). Note: a video inherits sharing permissions from its parent folder. A user may adjust this sharing permission to be more public than the parent folder setting, but not more private. Additionally, Your administrator can change what sharing options are available to you, so you might not see all of these options.
| Figure 10a Figure 10b |
5.2. You can also share videos, and see who videos are shared with, by hovering over the video in the video library and selecting the Share button that appears (Fig. 8). For instructions on how to share a video with additional people, please visit How to Share a Video.
6. Share with a Link 6.1. If you have set Who can access this video to any option except Restricted, you can copy and share the link by selecting the Copy Link button that appears. Link copied will appear at the bottom, indicating that you have successfully copied the link (Fig. 11). Note: Select the Embed icon to copy an embed code. | Figure 11 |
7. Social Sharing If enabled by their Panopto administrator, users can share their Panopto videos on certain social media websites. 7.1. Using the guidance in step 5.1., set the sharing option to Public or Public (Unlisted). The options for Facebook and Twitter will appear in color, rather than grayed out. Select either the Facebook or Twitter icon for the social media site you wish to share the video on (Fig. 12). Please note: If you wish to share the folder on a different site, please copy and paste the direct link using step 6, above, instead.
