Overview Creators can add Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) generated captions to their Panopto videos. In this article, learn how to add and edit ASR captioning. Note: Machine-generated captions are not the same as human transcriptions; as such, reviewing and editing ASR captions for accuracy is recommended. If multi-language ASR captioning is enabled, captions can only be added for the site or folder's default language. If you need to reprocess captions, please contact Panopto Support. Prerequisites
|
1. Importing Automatic Captions 1.1. Open the video in the Panopto Editor. On the Captions tab, select the Import captions drop-down (Fig. 1). Note: ASR captions may already appear in the Captions tab if an Administrator has enabled automatic captions for all sessions in the folder.
1.2. Select Import automatic captions (Fig. 2a). Note: If the video does not contain any speech then the option to Import automatic captions will not be available.
1.2.a. If the video already has captions, this will say Replace with automatic captions, instead (Fig. 2b).
1.3. If you are satisfied with how your captions appear, select Apply in the upper right corner of the editor to save your changes (Fig. 3).
2. Edit the Caption 2.1. Open the video in the Panopto editor and on the left-hand side of the screen, select the Captions tab (Fig. 4).
2.2. Click on the caption you want to edit. It will become editable (Fig. 5). Once you are done editing the caption, select the Enter key to save it.
2.3. Once you are finished editing the caption(s), select the Apply button in the upper right corner of the editor to save your changes (Fig. 6).
3. Edit the Timestamp 3.1. To the right of the caption, select the More icon, which looks like three dots, and then select Edit (Fig. 7a). The Edit Caption window will appear, allowing you to edit the caption's Start time and End time. Select Save to confirm the edit (Fig. 7b).
3.2. Once you are finished editing the caption timestamp(s), select the Apply button in the upper right corner of the editor to save your changes (Fig. 8).
4. Find and Replace a Word 4.1. In some cases, ASR captioning may not caption a recurring word correctly. To find and replace the word throughout your captions, select the Find & Replace icon in the upper right corner of the Captions window, to the right of the Language menu (Fig. 9).
4.2. The Find & Replace search boxes will appear. Enter the incorrect caption in the Find text box and enter the correct caption in the Replace with text box (Fig. 10).
4.3. Matches for the caption entered in the Find text box will appear highlighted in yellow (Fig. 11a).
4.3.a. To review and replace each individual instance, select the angle bracket icons, < and >, to the right of the Find box, and then select Replace to replace each one as needed (Fig. 11b).
4.3.b. To replace all of the instances, select the Replace all button (Fig. 11c).
4.4. Additionally, Panopto ASR will highlight low confidence captions. Low confidence captions are words that are commonly misinterpreted by ASR or words that occur when there is additional background noise. By selecting the left and right arrow icons in the bottom right corner of the Find & Replace window, you can tab through the words that are deemed low confidence (Fig. 12a). As you tab through the low confidence captions, they will appear highlighted in yellow (Fig. 12b).
4.4.a. To review and replace each individual instance, select the angle bracket icons, < and >, to the right of the Find box, and then select Replace to replace each one as needed (Fig. 12c).
4.4.b. To replace all of the instances, select the Replace all button (Fig. 12d).
4.5. To close the Find & Replace window, select the X icon in its lower right corner (Fig. 13).
4.6. Once you are finished updating the caption(s), select the Apply button in the upper right corner of the editor to save your changes (Fig. 14).
5. Delete a Caption 5.1. Open the video in the Panopto editor and on the left-hand side of the screen, select the Captions tab (Fig. 15).
